Carousels are offered in two (2) configurations to supplement the piece or full case picking and/or replenishment processes.
1. Vertical CarouselTrays of storage locations are stacked and rotated vertically creating high density storage and retrieval of SKUs for minimum footprint.
Implementing these vertical storage systems can reduce floor space footprint for storage by 50% to 80% and since SKUs are brought to the operator, walk time is reduced by up to 66% and pick rates of 150 to 200 lines per man hour can be achieved.
2. Horizontal CarouselVariable size storage bins with shelves are arranged in a revolving oval loop to present SKUs to the operator. Multiple loops are usually grouped together creating a “Pod” for an operator to pick from. The storage bins containing the SKUs to fill a scanned order are rotated into the operator position where a light tree typically directs the operator of which and how many SKUs to pick.
A Pod of horizontal carousels can result in picks rates up to 600% more than manual pick, reduce floor space up to 60%, increase accuracy up to 99.9% and reduce walk time by up to 66%.
Both Vertical and Horizontal carousels are directed by SI’s Carousel Picking Director which is one of SI’s Automated Order Fulfillment SINTHESIS™ software modules. SI’s Picking Director optimizes performance by minimizing rotations required to fill batches of orders.
